Campbell would later become the father
of what we now know as hip-hop.

A gang named Savage Seven would hit the streets of the East Bronx. Savage Seven later changes its name to Black Spades, before eventually becoming an organization known as the Zulu Nation.

DJ Kool Herc deejays his first block party (his sister’s birthday) at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Bronx, New York. Herc would often buy two copies of a record and stretch the break parts by using two turntables and mixing in both records before the break ends.

After years of being neglected by the mainstream media, hip-hop gets its own show on MTV, “Yo! MTV Raps.” N.W.A. pioneers the gangsta rap movement with their gold album, “Straight Outta Compton.”

2Pac signs a deal with Death Row Records after Marion “Suge” Knight posts his $1.4 million bail.

Moroccan rap makes it’s first appearance on the national public TV station 2M, featuring the group Ahmed & Amine. This duo were better know as “Double A”, and they were the first rap group to release an official album in Morocco.

The second album of the legendary Moroccan rap group “H-kayn”, that originate from Meknes, is the first Moroccan rap album to be sold abroad.

Jay-Z becomes the first rapper to headline Glastonbury, the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world.

The genre continues to diversify in 2011, with the release of Dizzy Dross’s first mixtape “Cazafonia”, which gets more than 7 million vues on Youtube shortly after it’s release.

Kendrick Lamar releases the album “How to pimp a butterfly” that got 7 Grammy nominations in 2016, and is regarded one of the greatest rap albums of all time.

The Moroccan female singer Manal Benchlikha better know for being a pop artist, releases the music video for her rap song “Taj”, that gathered more than 18 million vues. And was praised by critics all over Morocco.

The Moroccan rapper “El Grande Toto” collaborates with the famous Nigerian Singer “Ckay”, on the hit song “Love Nwantiti” which was a worldwide Tiktok sensation. The song amassed over 150 million vues on it’s two official videos released on Youtube.

Kanye West releases his highly anticipated 10th studio album “Donda”, that was the second most streamed album release on Spotify, and one of the year’s most awaited album drops.
